Today, Wai Young, Member Parliament for Vancouver South, on behalf of the Honourable Michelle Rempel, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced $775,000 in funding to Wavefront, Canada’s Centre of Excellence for Wireless Commercialization, to deliver the first Global Expansion Pilot Program of its kind for the Western Canadian wireless sector. The pilot will facilitate new international market and foreign trade opportunities for small and medium wireless firms in BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, and drive economic development in Western Canada.
“This investment demonstrates our Government’s commitment to support expanding market opportunities for western Canadian businesses.” MP Young explains. “The Global Expansion Pilot Program will promote international investment and trade, create new jobs and increase economic opportunities for workers in the wireless technology sector.”
Leveraging WD funding, Wavefront will help 15 high-growth and high-potential small- and medium-sized wireless companies to secure first paying customers in global markets, and a path to future export revenues. Wavefront will work with eligible firms to build a global market strategy, and then engage a foreign business development expert to support execution in the target market. Each participating business will have a different wireless product to sell to its target market. The role of the foreign business development expert will be customized to the needs of each firm, its product and target customer.
According to James Maynard, Wavefront’s President, “The global wireless market is growing at a staggering rate, creating significant opportunity for our wireless companies. This WD funding will enable Wavefront to help mobile firms across Western Canada to secure their first international reference customers in a new market, build export business, and accelerate global commercial success.”
The Global Expansion Pilot Program will help increase the R&D and business capacity of western small and medium enterprises in the wireless sector, enabling firms to pursue international business opportunities, secure first global customers, and grow their business in target foreign markets.
